Can polycarbonate sheets meet the requirements for sound barrier production?
Sound barriers are an indispensable part of urban roads, primarily serving to reduce noise and control its impact on people. When selecting materials for sound barriers, polycarbonate sheets are often considered. But can this material actually be used to make sound barriers? By understanding the properties of polycarbonate sheets, you will find that they are not only easy to manufacture but also offer excellent sound insulation, making them a common material in noise reduction applications. As such, they are perfectly suitable for use as sound barriers. How much noise can a sound barrier made of polycarbonate sheets actually reduce?
According to tests, the noise reduction capability of polycarbonate sheets depends on factors such as the frequency of the noise, the height of the barrier, and the distance between the noise source and the receiver. The noise reduction effect of the sound barrier is closely related to the frequency components of the noise. For high-frequency sounds above 2000Hz, the noise reduction effect is better than for mid-frequency sounds around 800–1000Hz. However, for low-frequency sounds around 25Hz, the effect is poorer. Therefore, when using polycarbonate sheets to construct sound barriers, to achieve better noise reduction, the barrier should be placed as close as possible to the noise source or the application area of the sound barrier.

Polycarbonate sheet product characteristics:
(1) Light transmittance: PC sheets can achieve a light transmittance of up to 89%, comparable to glass. UV-coated sheets are resistant to yellowing, fogging, and reduced transparency when exposed to sunlight. After ten years, the light transmittance loss is about 10%, while PVC loses 15–20%, and fiberglass loses 12–20%.
(2) Impact resistance: The impact strength is 250–300 times that of ordinary glass, about 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2–20 times that of tempered glass. It is known as "unbreakable glass" and "sounding steel."
(3) UV protection: One side of the PC sheet is co-extruded with a UV-resistant coating, while the other side has anti-condensation treatment. It combines UV resistance, heat insulation, and anti-fogging functions. It blocks ultraviolet rays, making it suitable for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from UV damage.
(4) Lightweight: The density is about half that of glass, reducing costs for transportation, handling, installation, and support frameworks.
(5) Flame retardancy: According to the GB50222—95 standard, PC sheets are classified as flame-retardant (B1 grade). The self-ignition point of PC sheets is about 580°C, and they self-extinguish when removed from fire. They do not produce toxic gases when burning and do not contribute to the spread of flames.
(6) Bendability: They can be cold-bent on-site according to design drawings to form arches, semi-circular roofs, and windows. The minimum bending radius is about 175 times the sheet thickness, and they can also be heat-bent.
(7) Sound insulation: PC sheets offer significant sound insulation, outperforming glass and acrylic sheets of the same thickness in acoustic insulation. Under the same thickness conditions, PC sheets improve sound insulation by 5–9 dB compared to glass. They are the material of choice for highway sound barriers.
(8) Energy efficiency: PC sheets keep interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. They have a lower thermal conductivity (K-value) than ordinary glass and other plastics, with heat insulation effects 7–25% higher than glass of the same thickness. PC sheets can achieve up to 49% heat insulation, significantly reducing heat loss, making them ideal for buildings with heating systems.
(9) Temperature adaptability: PC sheets do not become brittle at -40°C and do not deform at 125°C. Their mechanical and physical properties remain largely unchanged even in harsh environments.
(10) Weather resistance: PC sheets maintain stable physical properties within a temperature range of -40°C to 120°C. After 4000 hours of artificial weathering tests, the yellowing index is 2, and the light transmittance loss is about 0.6%.
(11) Anti-condensation: At an outdoor temperature of 0°C and an indoor temperature of 23°C, with indoor relative humidity below 80%, the inner surface of the material does not condense. Condensation flows along the surface of the sheet without dripping.
